21st century schools paper: opportunity for non-formal learning

We are pleased to see that in Tuesday’s DCSF White Paper, announced by Education Secretary Ed Balls, Your child, your schools, our future:  building a 21st century schools system, there is encouragement for schools to work in partnership with other children’s services to meet the needs of all pupils.  This creates an opportunity for the important role of non-formal learning to work with pupils that are not achieving through traditional methods.  Schools are currently struggling to help all of their pupils achieve the skills and learning needed for the future.  With partnerships, schools can tackle problems early on and help pupils who would struggle in the mainstream school setting by utilising alternative resources.

The paper’s ambition states, “The challenge to our education system is clear:  that is should prepare not just most children but every child to make a success of their life, developing the broader skills, knowledge and understanding that they will need for this future world.”  The role for non-formal learning in the future education system is inherent for this ambition to be met.
